Nexus Schooling System as a Successful Community Driven Social Enterprise Educational Model in Pakistan

Nexus Background:

Dr. Mumtaz Ali has completed his PhD studies in Malaysia from a world high ranked and country’s leading University (University of Malaya www.um.edu.my ). He came back with a vision to initiate an education program/project in district Malir. However, he talked with the likeminded friends. He shared his idea that a self-sustained institution should be initiated in rural areas of Karachi. A few friends supported him in this regard. An institution was established with the name of Nexus Schooling system. At initial time (in 2014) three schools were established in different villages of the Malir later on fourth one was also added in 2015.

These schools are giving the high quality education to the rural children. People of this area sent their children to the Nexus Schooling system. The confidence of the local people has increased with the passage of time. Slowly gradually an education drive was felt. That move has mobilized and sensitized women particularly. It is viewed that the mother plays an important role in the education of her child. In response mothers of the children started taking interest. The management of the schooling system learnt that just schooling system could not the only solution. However, it was decided that apart from the children the youth should also be the trained through different training programs. Hence, Nexus Institute, Nexus Academy were also established. Currently, the Nexus Schooling system, Academy and Institute work under the umbrella of Nexus group of Education.

At the Nexus Schooling System we are convinced that education is an interactive process which centers on the child and involves the teachers, the parents and environment. Each has its own importance and its essential that the whole process is well-coordinated. Hence, it is crucial that both parents be involved their child’s education from the very beginning.

Once a child is at school, it does not in any way absolve of any responsibility relating to a child development, progress, attitude and habits. A child spends hardly 20% of his/her time in the school in a day (total of 5 ours out of 24 hours). Hence, the school and the parents have to work together to attain quality education. The institute makes efforts to work as a team to develop and education our children in the best possible way.

Syllabus used in schools:

At Nexus Schooling system students study in a range of educational programmes depending on their school requirements.

1. Early Years (Nursery and Pre-Nursery/Pre-Primary)
2. Primary (Grades 1-5)
3. Secondary (Grades 6-10)

O levels syllabus is used in the schooling system. However, the prominent leading publishers have been selected i.e. Oxford University Press, Spectrum, Aafaq and Gohar Publishers.

Teachers Training

The training department provides a professional pathway for teachers interested in becoming teacher-trainers. It supports the trainers, trainees and tutors through their continuous professional development. The courses are offered on teaching skills, class room management, communication skills, children psychology and inclusive education.

Sponsor a Child Scheme

NSS is also offering a ‘Sponsor a Child Scheme’. Through this initiative we select the ultra-poor children who are orphans, their parents are disable, sick, elderly or jobless. We select these children on pure merit basis. This scheme is successfully implemented in the schooling system. At this moment 187 students are fully sponsored. They belong to very poorest families.

Team:

Currently, 161 academic and admin staff perform their duties as paid staff members. There is just two members who work on volunteer based (Dr. Mumtaz Ali and Mr. Manzoor Ahmed).

Uniqueness:

The Nexus Schooling System is considered as one of the successful rural based quality education models of Pakistan. Moreover, this system is run through completely community contributions. The parents pay fees as their contribution in the school. All the savings are being used for the management and development of the schools. Concerning to the community participation we can mentioned confidently that the NSS is sustainable community driven education model. This is a simple and easy replicatable model that can be implemented in every part of Pakistan. The team has already guided various schools and development workers regarding the establishment and running such schooling system. 

This model should be presented at national and international levels. So that the others can know and become beneficial from such models. We are available at any time for guidance and presenting this model in the best interest of the nation.
